Gaza International Airport has been closed for 9 years, since the Israeli military destroyed its runway and control tower during the Second Infitada in 2001. Citing security concerns, Israeli authorities have not allowed the airport's reopening. Even if Gaza were granted permission to rebuild, the necessary building materials would likely be restricted by the siege, and the $22 million rebuilding cost is a tall order for Gaza's strangled economy. Palestinian Airlines, established at the same time as Gaza International, was originally headquartered out of Gaza but now runs flights out of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
