Following the publication of a controversial report compiled by the Israeli NGO Breaking the Silence, the Israeli government's seems to be trying to
suppress human rights NGOs by cutting off their sources of funding. (click here to download the English version of the report compiled by Breaking the Silence).
Breaking the Silence compiled the testimonies of 26 IDF soldiers who served in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead. The eyewitness testimony of the soldiers points to what appears to be a change in policy regarding the rules of engagement. One soldier is quoted saying: "The soldiers were made to understand
that their lives were the most important, and that there was no way our
soldiers would get killed for the sake of leaving civilians the benefit
of the doubt."
The
following video report from Al Jazeera includes mention of several NGOs that have found themselves under fire from the Israeli government, which accuses them of using dubious methodoly to compile their reports. The video report includes an interview with a Human Rights Watch spokesman who denies that
HRW took any money from the Saudi government - or from any government.
